What Sold On eBay: March 21, 2019

What Sold On eBay

On Thursday, March 21, 2019, I sold one item on eBay.

1. I sold a Long Sleeve Halloween Scrub Top.

This was listed back in 2017 and is from a large lot of scrub tops that I picked up at a thrift store.

I reduced the price of the vast majority of our clothing by 50% today and this was one of those items. It sold at the new asking price.

Scrub tops were one of our “bread and butter” items back when I was picking up a lot of clothing. If I were to pick up any scrubs in the future I would stick with sizes XL and above with interesting prints. The smaller sizes, like most clothing, usually take longer to sell.

Other eBay Activity

Yesterday we did have one question (on a different scrub top) and one best offer that we countered (a game controller). Neither of those has gone anywhere yet, but some activity is better than none.

That said, we’ve only had two sales on eBay all week long. That is absolutely absurd given the amount of stock that we have listed on eBay.

Good ‘Til Canceled Feedback

From reports I’ve seen in various reselling groups, eBay has been getting a lot of negative feedback over the Good ‘Til Canceled change. One person even reported that the eBay rep told them they could see it getting reverted back. While I would take anything an eBay rep tells you with a grain of salt, that’s indeed my prediction.

What I find extremely odd about it is that there’s no value added with Good ‘Til Canceled for sellers or buyers. Speculation is that it’s SEO related, which I say is a moot point and not something most sellers would even care about nor want to know about. There are so many things that eBay could do to improve the platform, but changes like this are not one of them. Bottom line, no one was waiting to see this change and no one is going to be excited to see this change. At best the response would be “Meh”.

What Sold On eBay: March 20, 2019

What Sold On eBay

On Wednesday, March 20, 2019, I sold one item on eBay.

NRG Innovations SRK-100H NRG Short Hub Mitsubishi / FOR SUBARU

1. I sold an NRG Innovations SRK-100H NRG Short Hub car part.

This was picked up in an auction box lot about a month ago and sold at the full asking price as I did not place Best Offer on this one.

Car parts are usually a decent seller, but you do have to do a little research to figure out what some of them are and for which vehicles. Also, car parts seem to have a higher return rate than some other categories. But I will always pick them up when I run across them in new condition for a decent price.

eBay’s 76 Hour Vacation

Just when I thought things were getting back to normal on eBay, BAM!!!, no sales or offers on any of our three accounts for a 76-hour period.

Is the timing of that and the forcing of Good ‘Til Cancelled a coincidence? I don’t know. But it’s awfully strange that since last year every single time eBay implements major platforms changes we see a dip in sales. When they didn’t fiddle with anything in December & January things were going great. And that’s not just because of the holiday. January is usually slower for us and this year it was great.

eBay Sales Trends

Do you see any sales trends like this? Over the 20 years that I’ve been selling on eBay, I have seen obvious cycles and ups & downs. But what I’ve seen since 2018 falls outside of the norms. Maybe that’s just the “new eBay”, I don’t know. But it’s hard to adapt when everything is so fluid. And I begin to wonder if eBay will be a viable sales platform five years from now. In this age of technology, giants fall overnight. Something has to give and I honestly hope eBay pulls it together and comes out on top. In the meantime, there are other avenues to explore.

eBay’s Forced “Good ‘Til Cancelled” Has Arrived

Good ‘Til Cancelled Is Here

As announced in the eBay 2019 Early Seller Update on February 26th, as of March 18th eBay is now forcing all fixed price listings to be “Good ‘Til Cancelled” instead of the previous options of a certain amount of days of which 30-days was a popular choice.

When you list now you’ll be greeted with the following notice:

To help you sell your item, fixed price listings can only be listed with a Good ‘Til Cancelled duration. Listings renew automatically every 30 days, based on the listing terms at that time, until all quantities sell or the listing ends. Each time a listing renews and when an item sells, you’ll be charged applicable fees.

Sellers Confused by Good ‘Til Cancelled

A quick stroll through the various eBay groups and forums makes it apparent that many eBay sellers do not read the seller updates that eBay puts out. Post after post I saw numerous complaints and people wondering if this was yet another “Glitch Bay” issue and if anyone else was seeing this. If the groups & forums are like this I can only imagine that the eBay phone bank was off the hook making it difficult for those with real concerns to get through.

This is a major communication breakdown on both sides. And if we sellers won’t read the details how can we expect our buyers to?

Sellers Up In Arms over Good ‘Til Cancelled

Many seasoned eBay sellers have been up in arms over this change.

For various reasons, many sellers like to run items for only 5, 7 or 10 days at a time. Personally, I opted for 30-day listings so I can be forced to tweak items the longer they sit. Regardless of your choice, the argument is that eBay is dictating how you run your business. The truth of the matter is that it’s eBay’s playground and eBay’s rules. Adapt or move on.

But the biggest concern seems to be getting slammed with extra listing fees once your items renew and push you over the threshold of your “free” listings each month. That was actually my first thought as well. And eBay could fix this quite easily by extending the duration of listings to 31-days. If you’re over your allocated number of listings you should be able to see that fairly easily. By keeping it at 30-day renewals it comes across as eBay just grabbing for additional cash from the sellers.

How to Avoid Additional Fees For Automatic Renewals

The current solution being reported by eBay to avoid additional listing fees within a calendar month is simple. At day 28 of a listing, end it.

That was my initial thought as well, but I can see where that might be troubling for some. Say you’re in a premium store with 1,000 listings that auto-renew after your 1,000 monthly listings are depleted, then you’re hit with an extra $100 in listing fees. While I think that example might be extreme for most, that is concerning.

Why Are They Forcing Good ‘Til Cancelled?

While I cannot say for certain why eBay is making this change, my hunch is that it’s related to the Terapeek data which should start to be accessible soon, if not already. (We received our email about it yesterday.) But I don’t believe the statement of “to help you sell your item” at all. I’ve listed both 30-days & Good ‘Til Cancelled for years and don’t see Good ‘Til Cancelled selling more than 30-day listings.

Comp Research Implications

When searching comps on eBay one thing I like to look at are the completed items that did not sell. We need to get an idea of what sits and how long it sits. If everything is Good ‘Til Cancelled that info will go away. TBD what kind of information Terapeek gives, but maybe they give you an idea of days listed. TBD.

Good ‘Til Cancelled Prediction

My prediction is that this will be reverted, much like the experiment that eBay ran last year with forcing items to be unchanged for weeks before being able to run sales. If people flood them the people will be heard.

What Sold at the Antique Mall: March 18, 2019

eBay was Dead

On Monday, March 18, 2019, eBay was a complete goose egg and was crickets other than one low offer that I sent a reasonable counter to and haven’t heard anything back on.

This is the SIXTH day in March that eBay hasn’t had any sales (we have over 1,200 unique listings between three store accounts). I’ve been selling on eBay for 20 years and I’m well aware of the ups and downs, but this slow sales stretch that started at the end of January is starting to concern me. We’ve seen flickers of life the past two weeks, so hopefully, everyone was just hungover from St. Patrick’s Day. We shall see.

The Antique Mall Saves The Day!

The antique mall saved the day with one sale. A necklace for $12 that was part of a 20% off sale that I’m running through the end of the month. While not a huge sale by any means, it saves the day and assures that I’ll be getting a check from the Antique Mall this month. The Winnie The Pooh snow globe also sold earlier in the month (BOLO).

Overall I’m not really thrilled with how the Antique Mall is performing either, but it’s something I at least wanted to try. To be fair I’ll probably give it through the summer to see how an entire year shapes up.

As far as the necklace goes, I think it was the weird metal one (they didn’t get all of the stock number entered in). I frequently buy costume jewelry lots at the auction and decided to see how the necklaces do at the antique mall.  In almost 2 months that’s the first one to sell. I may need to reevaluate that, but I’ll wait until it’s warmer and people are actually getting out more.

What Sold On eBay: March 17, 2019

On Sunday, March 17, 2019, I sold three items on eBay. Slow sales day for a Sunday, but I’ll take it given how things have been going lately.

The odd thing is that all three items were from our clothing account. Clothing typically accounts for 1/3 or less of our daily sales, but here we have 100% and no movement on the main account at all.

1. I sold an Indiana University T-Shirt via best offer and with a 1% promoted listing.

I’m pretty sure this was a thrift store pick up back in 2017 or early 2018.

Another bad photo, taken on my HUGE male torso mannequin. Also something I’m not sure I’d pick up again.

2. I sold a Women’s Aeropostale High Waisted Shorty Jean Shorts via best offer.

While I dislike selling most clothing, I love selling women’s jean shorts. They’re easy to photograph, easy to ship, cheap to ship and easy to store. While they don’t go for a lot of money, they’re an easy “bread & butter” item to keep in stock.

These were probably picked up at a thrift store at some point in 2018.

3. I sold a Women’s Bob Mackie Wearable Art Jacket via best offer.

This was picked up at a thrift store back in 2017 and listed back in 2017 as well. I can tell because when I first started selling clothing I thought that a clothing rack would be a good purchase for taking clothing photographs. I was wrong. But it is good to hang things on.

This one goes on my anti-BOLO list.

2019 Q1 W11 Recap

Quantity wise we sold 15 items last week, which is up from 12 in week 10 and only 6 in week 9. For reference, we sold 33 items in week 11 of the first quarter in 2018 AND had less inventory listed.

We had our first week with sales every single day since week 7 and the numbers are trending upward, so hopefully, things are just a little late this year, possibly due to tax returns and the government shutdown fiasco.

More eBay Changes and a Comedy of Errors

That said, eBay has doing some major messing around with the site since late January and I’ve been seeing errors and new screens pop up all of the time. This is on both the buyer and seller side.

Last year they claimed they would test things and get feedback before implementing changes, but clearly, that wasn’t the case. This isn’t helpful for anyone. Please, eBay, get your act together and hire a competent IT AND management team. This is getting old.
